NFL in talks over major Super Bowl date change in boost to fans hoping have next day off – plus 18 other game tweaks

Goodell also proposed changes to the regular season schedule and international games

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that the Super Bowl could be on the move.

While discussing the NFL schedule with Pat McAfee, Goodell shared that he thinks the Super Bowl could fall on a long weekend.

Goodell shared some of his ideas about the NFL schedule, saying he likes the league at 17 games, but could see it expanding to 18.

The only way the league would move to 18 games though would be if they removed preseason games.

“I think we’re good at 17 [games] now,” Goodell said.

“But, listen, we’re looking at how we continue. I’m not a fan of the preseason.

“The reality is, I’d rather replace a preseason game with a regular-season game any day. That’s just picking quality.”

By adding an 18th week to the schedule it would add another bye to the schedule as well.

This would push the Super Bowl back by two weeks, meaning it would fall on Presidents’ Day weekend, a three-day weekend.

“If we get to 18 and 2, that’s not an unreasonable thing,” Goodell said.

“The other thing it does, [Super Bowl Sunday] ends on up Presidents’ Day weekend, which is a three-day weekend, which makes it Sunday night and then you have Monday off.”

Goodell might not stop at expanding the regular season either, he previously expressed a desire to expand the international slate of games.

‘Taylor Swift is a huge football fan and I’ve known her for 15 years’ claims NFL boss Roger Goodell in rare TV interview
There are currently five international games scheduled to be played in 2024. They will be held in London, England, Munich, Germany, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The five international games could potentially triple within the next decade.

“I honestly think we’ll be playing 16 games internationally if you go 10 years out,” Goodell said.

“I think we’ll try to get to eight or nine in the next couple years.”

Many other leagues take advantage of Presidents’ Day weekend for their biggest events.

What is the Hybrid Kickoff rule?

The NFL is seeking to revitalize kickoffs by increasing returns and reducing injuries.

The league is considering adopting a kickoff style similar to one used in the XFL, among sweeping changes.

If adopted, the rules would be implemented on a year-long trial.

The proposal features new alignments for the both the kicking and receiving units.

The receiving team is limited to playing a maximum of two returners in the “landing zone,” the area between the team’s goal line and the 20-yard line.

All kickoffs in the landing zone must be returned by receivers.

Kicks that miss the landing zone will result in the ball being played at the 20-, 30- or 40-yard line.

The rule is designed to incentivize kickers to kick a returnable ball.

The NBA All-Star weekend always falls on Presidents’ Day weekend for a long weekend of festivities.

NASCAR also kicks off their season with the Daytona 500 on the Sunday of Presidents’ Day weekend.

It would certainly be a huge boost to fans to expand the season to get a day off after the Super Bowl, but players may not be so supportive.

When the initial schedule expansion from 16 to 17 games occurred, it barely passed the NFLPA vote with 51 percent of votes.

“They’re really just saying 17 so they can get to 18 [games],” former player Richard Sherman said at the time.

“So that’s two more opportunities for players to risk their bodies [and] to put their bodies on the line.”
