James Gunn earlier revealed a first look at the Superman costume when he revealed the House of El ‘S’ symbol on Instagram.

When a concept pic of David Corenswet in the complete suit, including the red and yellow ‘S’ symbol, circulated on the internet, fans believed it was an official image from the DCU. Now, Gunn has taken to social media to clarify that the circulating image is incredible fan art.

The director also quoted ScreenRant, who earlier shared the fan art and explained that it was from a fan and not an official one from DCU.

Along with releasing the suit tease, Gunn also revealed the name change of the film from Superman: Legacy to Superman last month.

James Gunn announced the start of filming of Superman on February 29 on his Instagram. Along with that, he also shared a first look into the Superman suit, which sent fans into discussion mode about the ‘S’ symbol.

The symbol was inspired by the DC Comics storyline, Kingdom Come, with some minor changes in the design. The color of the symbol was changed from red and black in the comics to the more classic red and yellow.

While Gunn’s reveal stopped at the ‘S’ symbol, an image of David Corenswet in a classic suit with the same symbol appeared online. ScreenRant shared the image and revealed that it was fan art from the Instagram artist @21xfour.

The artist mentioned that they took inspiration from the initial ideas and turned them into fully realized creations.

However, ScreenRant’s explanation did not clear the fans’ doubts about the suit. One fan took to Threads to ask Gunn whether the fan art has a likeness to the movie’s suit.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director replied to the fan, “Nope. It’s incredible fan art – just like @screenrant said!”

Not only did the concept art accurately emulate the S symbol, but Corenswet also sports the classic Superman trunks in the image, which continues to be a point of debate among some fans.

The suit shows the well-toned body of the superhero and also gives flashes of Christopher Reeve‘s Superman costume from Richard Donner‘s films.

While the DC CEO has yet to reveal the full look at the Superman suit, he has given various details about the costume to fans on his social media.

James Gunn Also Shed Light On Superman’s Trunks Debate

Ever since James Gunn revealed that he wanted to give a mix of classic and modern looks to his Superman, fans started a weird debate on Superman’s costume.

Their debate was about whether the Man of Steel should sport the red trunks in David Corenswet’s iteration. As the debate raged on, a few fans made direct pleas to Gunn, asking him to include or not include the trunks.

Gunn shared on Threads that he was getting a vast amount of messages regarding the trunks, with so many of them expressing strong feelings for or against them. The Suicide Squad director shared that it was “not the most important aspect of Superman or his story”.

Besides Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult will play the roles of Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane and villain Lex Luthor respectively. Other confirmed cast members of the film include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.

James Gunn’s Superman will hit the theaters on July 11, 2025.
