Mike Tyson Names Floyd Mayweather as His Dream Opponent from Any Era

Mike Tyson, the legendary former heavyweight champion, has faced some of the most formidable opponents in boxing history. Known for his fierce and relentless style, Tyson has squared off against the likes of Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks, and Lennox Lewis. However, when asked to name his dream opponent from any era, Tyson didn’t hesitate to choose another boxing legend: Floyd Mayweather.

During an interview with Steve Farhood on ShoBox, Tyson was posed with the intriguing question. “Well, I would love to have fought him. I wish he was my weight,” Tyson explained. “We can never fight, of course, because of the weight difference, but I wouldn’t fight him the way they fought him.”

Mayweather, who retired with an impeccable 50-0 professional record, is widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters in boxing history. His technical prowess and ability to avoid taking significant damage in the ring have made him a formidable opponent for anyone.

Despite the respect he holds for Mayweather’s skills, Tyson believes he would approach a fight with Mayweather differently. “I would be mean, I would be dirty. Because you’d have to do everything to fight him because he’s just so good,” Tyson said. “You can’t… it’s almost impossible to fight him clean. It’s just so hard to beat him.”

Tyson’s admiration for Mayweather’s style is clear, but he maintains that his strategy would be uniquely aggressive. “The style he deploys – it’s really difficult to beat him in that particular style. I don’t care. Love him or hate him, he’s a hard man to beat. I would fight a guy like Floyd differently if he was a heavyweight.”

Tyson’s insights into how he would tackle a bout with Mayweather provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of boxing’s all-time greats. Despite the weight difference making an actual match impossible, the hypothetical scenario of Tyson vs. Mayweather continues to captivate boxing fans around the world.

The 57-year-old Tyson, who last fought in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020, was set to return to the ring on July 20, 2024, against YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul. However, due to a health issue, the fight has been rescheduled for November 15, 2024. Tyson’s willingness to continue competing and his reflections on past and potential opponents demonstrate his enduring passion for the sport of boxing.
