On July 11th, 2024, Prince Harry was slated to receive the prestigious Pat Tillman Service Award, named in honor of the former NFL player who sacrificed a promising sports career to serve in the military, tragically losing his life to friendly fire in 2004. This award, established to commend individuals exemplifying service in the military or through community organizations, has stirred significant controversy and debate this year.

Reports circulating suggest that Prince Harry’s nomination for the Pat Tillman Award, alongside others, may be a strategic move to bolster his O-1A visa application. According to various sources online, receiving awards can substantially strengthen visa applications by highlighting an individual’s potential contributions to the country and showcasing their achievements.

Harry’s acknowledgement for his achievements, aimed at strengthening his visa application, has sparked scrutiny and divided opinions. Critics argue vehemently that his controversial past and alleged actions disqualify him from receiving such a prestigious honor. Among the allegations are claims of casual racism, accusations of animal cruelty, reports of inappropriate behavior including allegations of sexual harassment, and admitted drug use.

Prince Harry’s military tenure has also faced scrutiny and criticism, particularly during his deployment in Afghanistan, where incidents such as the Camp Bastion attack raised questions about his role and response. His disclosures and memoirs regarding military actions and personal conduct have further drawn criticism from various quarters.

Critics point to Harry’s own admissions and public statements that have sparked controversies, including remarks about the US First Amendment which he described as “bonkers.” His departure from royal duties resulting in the loss of military patronages, coupled with allegations of misconduct during his military service, have tarnished his reputation among some military circles.

Moreover, incidents such as playing strip billiards while on active duty and admitting to drug use have raised serious concerns about his suitability for receiving an award that honors selflessness and sacrifice. Harry’s interactions with the media and the public, marked by contradictions and retractions, have fueled skepticism about his eligibility for such an award.

His reported behavior, including past controversies like dressing up as a Nazi and making insensitive remarks, has led critics to question the appropriateness of honoring him with an award that celebrates service and sacrifice. Additionally, Harry has been involved in controversial incidents involving animals, such as using spurs excessively on his pony, causing severe injuries, and reportedly hunting protected birds.

In February 2021, Queen Elizabeth II took the unprecedented step of stripping Prince Harry of his military patronages, including titles such as Captain General Royal Marines and Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington, following his withdrawal from official duties as a senior royal.

The controversy surrounding Prince Harry’s nomination for the Pat Tillman Award underscores ongoing debates about his character and suitability for such recognition. As opinions remain divided and scrutiny intensifies, the outcome of this controversy will likely impact perceptions of both Prince Harry and the award itself in the public eye.
