Darren Aronofsky has time and again stunned the world with his works, with The Whale being his most recent exploit. The 2022 film was considered remarkable for many reasons, with Brendan Fraser’s remarkable return being at the top of the list.

His redemption story dwarfed everything else, but one should not make the mistake of ignoring Aronofsky’s genius. The Black Swan director has proved over the course of his career that he happens to be one of the most bankable men in the industry.

Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! caught the world by surprise

Michelle Pfeiffer had the fortune of working with Darren Aronofsky for Mother! The psychological thriller brought together an ensemble cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, and Kristen Wiig.

No wonder the 54-year-old was going to cook with this cast. Yet something felt off, with many failing to wrap their heads around what actually went down.

But for anyone who knows how to read between the lines, the movie has a lot to offer. The entire film is a carefully constructed metaphor, brought alive onscreen with a series of several confusing, disturbing, and spine-chilling visuals.

The movie is particularly known for being very uncomfortable to watch, too gory for the weak-hearted.

A nightmare of an impending doom

Mother! left everyone shocked with how the story evolved. Some found it hard to stomach the grim turn of events.

And that includes one of the stars, Michelle Pfeiffer. The Maleficent star recalled the experience of shooting the movie.

She said (via IMDb),

“Sometimes I have this nightmare where I’m trying to warn people around me of some impending doom, some disaster that is about to happen. “

That is what her director was trying to do with Mother!

Mother! was a wake-up call from Darren Aronofsky

Darren Aronofsky's Mother! Mother! forced everyone to introspect
Pfeiffer elaborated on how her dreams were somewhat similar to a warning from the director. The Murder on the Orient Express star continued,

“My entire dream is trying to find my way out, trying to convince people. This film feels like that to me. I think it’s Darren going ‘Wake up!’”

It wouldn’t be amiss to say that he did that with ease, as a host of people began introspecting after watching the movie.
